I swear this move is going to drive me insane!! So...we had the termite inspection Monday...thought it would be just routine. Nope. The inspector (guy from Orkin who I did not like from the moment he set foot in my house) checked out my house in less than 10 minutes and then informed me that we had a problem. He said that there are no live termites in the house at this time but that he found a window sill in the basement with evidence of termite damage. He said this means that at some time during the life of this house (which is 53 years old by the way) there were termites. I again asked: "yes, but there are not termites now, correct?" He said there weren't but that he wouldn't feel comfortable signing off on the house without treating it...$2000 (and that figure even includes a discount for being a current Orkin client...they treat our house every other month). I was horrified! I told him I would have to talk to my husband. I had Bill pull out the termite inspection from when we bought this house 3 years ago because I knew it was given a clean inspection. The inspection reported that there was evidence of termite damage in the basement on the window but that tubing and drill holes were present indicating that the house had been previously treated. He recommended no further treatment. So...I talked to my friend Joe who just recently went through the same thing with their house. He gave me a referral to a local one-man pest control outfit who Joe felt was very honest. I called him and explain the situtation and he will be out today to look at the house. Of course we will have to disclose the first inspection to the buyer and he has already illustrated that he is very nervous about this whole thing (young, first time buyer)...we had to get some electrical work done after he received the home inspection (at our expense). Hopefully this won't be an issue because we close in 14 days!! In other news...Bill just had an article published in The Birmingham News. I would put a link but they don't display the whole paper online so his article isn't there. Anyways...he wrote in an "Opinion" piece after Ruben almost got voted off of American Idol two weeks ago. In short, it talks about his theory about "how" it happened that a clear favorite almost bit the dust. He speculates that most people were trying to vote "strategically." They assumed that since Ruben was the clear "winner" that he didn't really need their vote and so they voted for their second favorite in hopes of keeping them around a little longer. If most people are doing this then it would lead to Ruben not getting enough votes. He sent it to Birmingham since that's Ruben's hometown and they ran it! I was pretty impressed since they have over 200,000 readers. Can you tell I am proud of him:-) Will and I are doing great. We went over Will's friend Isabelle's house yesterday to play. He had a great time - they play so well together. Isabelle always gets so excited when she sees Will. It is so cute! Well I better get some things done while Will is napping. Where to begin...sorry it has been so long since my last entry. We are counting down to the big move and there is still a lot to be done. All of the home inspections have been completed and everthing is moving along smoothly. We close on our Athens home on the 27th of this month and the new house on the 30th. I had the worst moment in my entire life last weekend. My mom had been here the week before helping me pack and I decided Will and I would go back with her to PA to suprise my Dad. The visit started off well but quickly turned into a nightmare. Will fell down the basement stairs. We didn't think he was tall enough to reach the handle but he was. I was sitting at the kitchen table with my back to the door when all of a sudden my brother John says: "Will, how did you get the door open" and ran for the stairs. I turned around just in time to see Will go tumbling down the 16 stairs that lead to the finished basement. I can still see it in my mind like it just happened. I started screaming as Johnny ran down the stairs trying to catch up to him. He hit the bottom and started screaming. Johnny brought him up to me (I can't run down the stairs these days) and I was histerical. I told Johnny to call 911 and he did. As I waited I tried to comfort him and get him to stop crying. I didn't know if he was seriously hurt or just scared. He had a goose-egg the size of a golf ball on the left side of his head along with rug burns on the left side of his face by his eye (the carpeting was actually a blessing because it cushioned him as he tumbled). A police officer showed up first to question us about what had happened. I'm sure they hear "my kid fell down the stairs" all the time to hide abuse. The EMTs showed up shortly after and the police officer left. They checked him over and asked me to put him down and see if he could walk o.k. He did. They said they felt he was fine and that there was no need to take him to the hospital but I wanted to have him checked out by a Doc anyways so I called Bill really quickly to tell him what happened and ask him if he thought I should take him to the hospital. He said "of course." They took him in the ambulance and he was checked out by a Doc. He said he was fine but that he would probably have a bad headache for a few days so treat with tylenol. We were lucky that the stairs were carpeted and that they were enclosed so he didn't fall over the side and fall straight down. Also, he landed bottom first at the bottom of the stairs instead of head first...thank heavens because the landing is stone tile and he could have cracked his head open. I followed up with my pediatrician when I got back into town and he is fine. It was the single worst experience of my life...worse than finding out I had cancer...worse than losing my leg! I always knew I loved him with all my heart but at that moment I realized that my life would be over if something happened to him. I have never been so scared in all my life. Praise God he is o.k. My poor little brother Johnny...this was a very tramatic experience for him as well. He tried to get to Will before he fell forward but it wasn't possible and so he had to see him falling all the way down the stairs too. I am so thankful that Johnny was there...he was a huge help to me (my mom and dad were away for the afternoon so it was just us)...he kept a cool head. Not much else going on right now. I had a wonderful Mother's Day today. Will got me some lovely gifts and Bill ordered in Chinese for dinner so I didn't have to cook (that alone is a great Mother's Day gift). I'll try to write more regularly. posted by Katie Cunion Sunday, May 11, 2003
